Software Evolution
It is easy to use some of the more simple software, but understanding it and being good at it are two different things. I started out by shooting for something I could understand, for me this was a program called Virtual DJ. This program supplied me with all of the basic functions that a DJ would need and for free because of their demo offer. Eventually I learned different lingo and what beat matching was. After I acquired a great deal of new knowledge I started to gather music that would best serve a full digital DJ.
Stylistic vs. Dynamic Mixing
When I started DJing I quickly found out that there was more to DJing than putting songs you liked together beat matched in a mix. There were many different genres of electronic music and they didn’t all like to get along. For example I found out about the genre of drum and bass also known as DnB, and was quick to understand that while the BPM of those songs were around 180, the speed of house music was usually around 129 BPM. When I started out I would mix together genres in a unique way that would allow for such large tempo changes though out a mix while not making songs sound out of place.
